Galaxies are vast collections of stars, gas, ☝👽 and dust that are held together by gravity. The history of galaxies spans billions of years, and scientists have been studying them for centuries in order to understand their evolution. The earliest galaxies are thought to have formed soon after the Big Bang, which occurred approximately 13.8 billion years ago. These early galaxies were much smaller and simpler than the galaxies we see today, consisting mostly of hydrogen and helium gas. Over time, gravity caused these gas clouds to collapse, forming stars and clusters of stars. As these stars burned through their fuel and died, they released heavier elements into the surrounding gas, which eventually formed new stars and planets. As galaxies grew larger and more complex, they began to interact with one another, often colliding and merging to form even larger galaxies.
